Rooted in History
Welcome to the New Hope Cinema, a living testament to the enduring spirit of community and entertainment. The roots of the cinema trace back to a transformative moment in history. In 1945, as the Second World War drew to a close, an air of new optimism and growth enveloped Hope. This period saw the birth of various enterprises, and among them, the "New Hope Theatre" took its place. Originating from the BC Interior, the Trout family embarked on a mission to construct two theaters — one in Hope, owned by W.A. Trout, and another in Agassiz, owned by his brother Neil Trout.
In an era before the ubiquity of television and the proliferation of automobiles, the New Hope Theatre stood as a place where families and friends gathered to share stories, laughter, and the magic of the silver screen. Constructed by the visionary Trout family, the original theatre in Hope showcased films that transported the audience to worlds far beyond the boundaries of their everyday lives.
Journey Through Time
As the years rolled on, the cinema witnessed the ebb and flow of technological evolution. From the initial era of sold-out screenings to the challenges posed by television, home video, and the digital age, this charming single-screen movie house remained resilient. Passing through different hands during the 80s and 90s, the cinema weathered periods of change, even embracing a quirky stint as a chainsaw museum.
Restoration of Glory
The dawn of the 21st century marked a new chapter for the cinema. Acquired by Kevin Larson, the theatre experienced a renaissance. Under Larson's passionate stewardship, the disused cinema was lovingly restored to its former glory. Reviving the elegance of its original design, the cinema once again welcomed patrons with open arms.
Revival
The favorite, long-time entertainment venue, dormant during the start of the pandemic, rekindled its marquee lights in 2021 as new owners stepped in to reinvigorate the beloved cinema. Now dubbed the "Hope Cinema Cafe", it again became more than just a place to watch a film; but a dynamic cultural hub. Beyond its cinematic offerings, the venue hosted diverse events such as wrestling and a wide selection of live music.
